Director – Full time position as Director of the Northern Star cruise boat 

Salary: $60,000  
Benefits: healthcare up to $5,000 annually

SUMMARY:  

You will act as the principal development, operations, and administrative officer of the Northern Star tour  boat and directly serve the NS Directors, consistent with the corporation’s by-laws, policies, and  procedures. You will direct the day-to-day operations to carry out the corporation’s goals and program  work, and strive to maintain and promote the mission of MCM as established by the Board of Directors.  You will act as an official spokesperson for the Northern Star and represent the organization in dealing  with individuals, donors, organization partners, vendors, suppliers and the general public. This position is  directly accountable to the NS Chair and Board to whom you will report. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

The following job tasks are ordered by their priority within the broad duties of the NS Director.  

Northern Star Operations: 

The NS Director will lead efforts to prepare for a successful season aboard the Northern Star.  ▪ Outreach to corporate sponsors and guest groups;  

▪ Marketing and social media efforts to promote the Northern Star

Administrative oversight of NS cruise and food service operations;  

▪ Hiring, preparing, and overseeing staff for tour and food/beverage operations.  The Director will be the point person to manage public bookings.  

The Director will oversee the NS ticket office (and kitchen).  

The Director will be prepared to actively work on the NS when necessary.  

Networking:  

The NS Director will build effective working relationships with staff, MemSEC Director, Newport City  Downtown Development, local schools and organizations.  

Fundraising:  

The Director will work with NS Board to assist in fundraising efforts.  

Education:  

The NS Director will work with the MemSEC Director to develop and implement on board educational  programs (Floating Classroom).  

SUPERVISION:  

The NS Director will meet at least twice a month with MCM’s NS Board Chair to review successes and  challenges, set appropriate goals, and problem solve together.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Deckhands assist with the operation of the Northern Star to meet company standards to ensure safety and customer satisfaction. Deckhands are required to participate in training and certification to ensure full safety compliance with US Coast Guard regulations. Deckhands are responsible to the Captain to ensure the boat is ready for each tour, to ensure the customers have the best possible experience during the tour, and to ensure that the boat is appropriately cleaned and ready for the next tour at the end of each trip.

Boat Operations

  • Safe Docking Protocols: Assists the Boat Captain with the docking of the Tour boat as needed, communicates with the Captain to provide visual and depth information to allow a safe docking process

  • Completes checklists as directed by Captain and MCM Director 

  • Assists with inspections of the mechanical systems which include drive systems, generator, electrical and water system as directed by the Captain, informs Captain of any scheduled maintenance that is necessary to ensure proper and safe operation

Customer Service

  • Prior to tour, review group expectations and special needs with MCM Director.

  • Communicates with the Captain and the group organizer to ensure that all customer needs are met promptly; the captain will be the point of contact for all requests by the group during the tour and will be responsible for communicating these requests to staff.

  • Assists in the loading and unloading of passengers on the boat for the various functions

  • Assists the Captain in maintaining a safe environment for all passengers by enforcing applicable policies and regulations

  • Provide excellent service in provision of drinks, snacks, and meals during tour.

Tour Preparation/Clean Up

  • Assists Captain and MCM Director in the coordination to ensure that boat is properly set up and at the point of departure as scheduled

  • Coordinate with MCM Director to ensure proper set up for buffet tours/theme tours prior to each cruise

  • Cleans, sets up and breaks down tables and chairs and any other special requests of boat for function

  • Complete cleaning checklist at the end of each tour to ensure the highest possible standard of cleanliness for MCM customers

Expectations 

  • Deckhands shift begins an hour before scheduled departure

  • Deckhands shift ends one half hour after the tour arrives at the dock or whenever all tasks on cleanup checklist are accomplished

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS/EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION:

 

  • Ability to pass drug test required by US Coast Guard for service on the vessel

  • Strong swimming skills

  • Must have basic mechanical aptitude and desire to learn

  • Must have ability to work with the public, good interpersonal and communication skills

  • Must have positive attitude, high energy level, and be a team player

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
